(1959) did you know that eddie floyd, wilson pickett, joe stubbs, and sir mack rice (“mustang sally”) were all in a band before they became famous? well, they were, and yes, they ruled. looking back isn’t this kind of like the r&b equivalent of temple of the dog, but times a thousand?
The Durutti Column - The Return of the Durutti Column
(1980) one of my favorite records. vini reilly is a guitar god and his sound will undoubtedly still be as “new” another thirty-two years from now. ”sketch for summer” might also be the finest opening track ever.
Marlena Shaw - The Spice Of Life
(1969) “they say the sun comes up every morning / and if you listen of so carefully / the winds that ride on the high tide/ whistles a mellow beat / and so the people started to sing / and that’s how the surf gave birth, i’m told / to california soul.” summer is here.

Spiritualized - Sweet Heart Sweet Light
(2012) jason pierce singing (again) about death, drugs, jesus, and/or redemption in that all familiar drug-induced gospel way only he seems able pull off. ”hey jane” kills it as a kind of psych-rock version of lcd’s “all my friends.” ends with a duet (and co-written!) with his 10-year old daughter. simply put, this rules.
Lotus Plaza - Spooky Action at a Distance
(2012) - lockett pundt’s (deerhunter) second solo release. looped guitars, lazy vocals, infinite hooks, and all the other kinds of things indie rock bands did in the 90’s.
Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical - Ranil’s Jungle Party
(summer) enjoyed best with sunshine and a beer + lime.
(2012) this is just the best. check it if you like music. ”goddess eyes ii” for song of the year - it’s like an orgy between enya, an electronic paul simon, and laurie anderson. yep.
Bernard Fevre - The Strange World of Bernard Fevre
(1975) you probably know him as black devil disco, but his solo stuff is way more mellow. pretty much lays the groundwork as to what future frenchies, air, would try to sound like (read: mimic, imitate, copy, et cetera) some twenty years later. so, yeah, if you dig cosmic synths and well, air, you should probably get this.
(2012) kind of like a european shabazz palaces, but actually good (like, really good). get your shaq references and grouper samples here.
(2012) get ur sizzurp reddy.

Pearls Before Swine - Balaklava
(1968) proto-freak folk for a cloudy day. complete with a cover of cohen’s “suzanne,” which kind of makes it a typical depressing 60/70’s release. fun fact - j.r.r. tolkien gets a co-writing credit. listen to this if you really appreciate being doleful.
